Reader Eugene writes in to explain why there is a 65th team:
"At some point after the tournament expanded
to 64 teams, one conference split into two.
The NCAA wanted to give an automatic bid to
the champion of each, but did not want to
reduce the number of at-large bids. So they
invented the play-in game, for the bottom
two teams."

My apologies to all readers of the Numb3rs blog.
(1) I've been quite busy with schoolwork and
(2) There simply has not been much interesting math used on the show.
